Akira Komayama is a highly prolific Japanese freelance illustrator and designer who has been contributing to the Pokémon Trading Card Game since 2010.

His art style is instantly recognizable for its bold, medium-thick linework, incredibly vibrant coloring, and dramatic lightning effects. Unlike many artists who opt for static museum poses, Komayama is celebrated for infusing an immense sense of motion, personality, and cinematic storytelling into a single card frame.

  Notable Cards & Artistic Hallmarks

Beyond the Starmie V character rare, Komayama has illustrated over 250 cards across multiple eras:

  • Galarian Zapdos V (Alternate Art – Chilling Reign): One of his most famous modern chase cards, depicting the Legendary bird sprinting down a steep, rocky mountain slope with high-octane forward momentum.
  • Miriam (Special Illustration Rare – Scarlet & Violet Base Set): Features his signature “slice of life” storytelling style, humorously catching the Academy nurse fumbling a massive stack of books.
  • Deoxys VMAX (Special Art Rare – Crown Zenith): Showcases his talent for intense, cosmic energy and dynamic action posing.
  • Trainer Supporter Cards: He is a frequent choice for modern Full Art trainers, lending his clean, anime-adjacent aesthetic to popular characters like Iono, Arven, Larry, and Katy.
