Of Bikes And Men is a series of bicycle illustrations which I started when I definitely moved to The Hague in 2017. The idea of this long term personal project is to draw an original but realistic portrait of the people of Netherlands through their bicycles.
Most of these illustrations are inspired by real life situations I witnessed myself.
When I began these illustrations I had – and I still have – two references in mind :
– The Dutch artist Dick Bruna for the simplicity of his illustrations , the elegance of his continuous thick black lines, and his flat colors.
– The cartoon “Father and Daughter”, from Dutch director Michael Dudok de Wit, which gave me my first hint about Dutch bikes, landscapes and weather, many years ago.
